Richard Franklin was born in New Jersey, to parents who moved North from Georgia during the Great Migration of African Americans. Currently a nomad, Franklin spent 20 years living in Georgia, and his work is greatly influenced by the richness of black culture found all along the east coast. He is inspired by the beauty of black life and the American landscape in all its variety - his home town of Jersey City, the farming communities of Pennsylvania, the unique flavor of New Orleans, the mountains of Appalachia, and his adopted home of Atlanta.
Franklin received a degree in Fine Art from Kutztown University in 1988. He served as the Director of the art nonprofit Amos Art Academy from 2006 to 2015 . His work has spanned varying media, including sculpture, woodworking, photography, and ceramics, but he currently is focused on painting as his primary discipline.
Richard has recently won awards at several fine arts shows and travels around the country showing and selling his work.
